Kirby News
Dear Parents or Guardians:
We want to thank you for helping our children and teachers have a great learning experience together.  We are excited to announce that Ms. Reeves has returned to Kirby. She will be at Kirby on a limited basis.
We have noticed a larger number of students without name tags in the morning. Please help make sure your child has a name tag with them when they are off to school. Our cafeteria lines are slowed tremendously in the morning after having to look up each child. Any help in this matter would greatly be appreciated. If you need another name tag because one has been lost, you may purchase one in the front office for $2.00. Or, you may send the money in an envelope with child’s name, room number and teacher written on the outside of the envelope.
Tuesday, January 24, 2012, the first grade teachers will be conducting a parent workshop about MATH afterschool at 6:00PM. We will be discussing different lessons in mathematics. We will meet in the cafeteria and break out into classrooms for fifteen (15) minute rotating lessons. We are thrilled to be able to present different ideas that will help our first grade parents out. Please plan to come.
February 2nd will be Group Picture day. Please dress your children in their best clothes as they will be taking a group.
February 6th-10th we will be having a Book Fair in the library. Our children are always looking forward to going to the library, and this is a great way to have them buy a favorite book. We are looking forward to a great year for our book fair.
We will begin a new program Feb. 13, 2012 called, “Breakfast in the Classroom.” This program will allow all children to eat breakfast in the classrooms(7:55-8:05). The idea is that every child will come to school, and get a good breakfast to start the day. A fed belly makes for a fed mind. Research has shown that children that have a good breakfast excel in their academics, are less likely to become sick, and lessen discipline issues in the classroom. We will have more details in the future, and we are very excited to have this program come to our school. Having breakfast in the classroom will give the children a chance to interact like they would at a breakfast table at home, among their friends they interact with every day.
The children are really excited about the second half of the year. The next couple of weeks we will be assessing the K-1st grades using TPRI and AIMSWEB. We will be looking for indicators of any reading problems that may still be of concern. This will help us to know how to help them read better, faster, with greater retention.
We want to thank you for your continued help with our students. We love them at Kirby.
Thank you,
Everyone at Kirby Elementary
